PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make element characteristics after polishing uniform by polishing the ends of magneto-resistive elements under impression of an external magnetic field thereon and stopping the polishing at the point of the time the resistance change of the magneto-resistive elements attains a desired value. ;SOLUTION: Plural pieces of magnetic heads are formed in longitudinal and transverse directions on a substrate. Next, the substrate is cut, by which bar-shaped blocks 7, 8 lined up with the plural magnetic heads in one row are formed. Leader wirings 9 are then connected to these bar-shaped blocks 8 and thereafter, the bar-shaped blocks are mounted in a recessed part 3a of a supporting plate 3. The bar-shaped blocks 8 are so arranged that the front ends of the MR(magneto-resistive) elements come into contact with polishing cloth. A lower surface plate 2 is then rotated by a rotating mechanism 1 and further, an upper surface plate 4 is lowered and rotated. A resistance value detecting circuit 13 measures the change rate of the resistance value to a magnetic field change and a signal to end the polishing is outputted to a control section 14 at the point of the time this change rate of the resistance value attains the prescribed value.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
