PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersant for a lubricating oil, excellent in dispersing performance and having a low load on the environment by subjecting a polyolefin to addition reaction with maleic acid highly efficiently under chlorine-free conditions.;SOLUTION: A polyolefin is reacted with maleic acid anhydride in the presence of an aromatic olefin by using an organic free radical initiator to give a polyalkylene succinic acid anhydride modified with an aromatic olefin. A polyalkylene succinic acid derivative containing essentially no chlorine, producing no harmful substance, such as a dioxin, on combustion, and useful as an intermediate of a dispersant for a lubricating oil can be obtained at a high conversion.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
