PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optically active 6, 6'-dimethyl-1, 1'-biphenyl-2, 2'-diol derivative, an optically active 5, 5'-substituted-6, 6'-dimethyl-1, 1'-biphenyl-2, 2'-diol derivative useful as a raw material thereof, and a manufacturing method thereof.;SOLUTION: A racemic 5, 5'-substituted-6, 6'-dimethyl-1, 1'-biphenyl-2, 2'-diol derivative is converted into a phosphate of an optically active secondary alcohol, then optically resolved, and hydrocracked to give the optically active 5, 5'-substituted-6, 6'-dimethyl-1, 1'-biphenyl-2, 2'-diol derivative. Thus obtained derivative is dealkylated to give 6, 6'-dimethyl-1, 1'-biphenyl-2, 2'-diol.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
