PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for locating fault points in transmission lines for improving accuracy in locating the fault points.;SOLUTION: Mode conversion is performed on a three-phase unbalanced transmission line of a power transmitting circuit into a plurality of virtual single-phase transmission lines by eigenvectors. On the basis of measured values of voltages and currents at both ends of the three-phase unbalanced transmission line, the distances K_S0, K_Sα, K_Sβ between a sending end S and a fault point (f) and the distances K_R0, K_Rα, K_Rβbetween a receiving end R and the fault point (f) in the plurality of mode-converted virtual single-phase transmission lines (mode 0, α, and β) are determined.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
