PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a single mode optical fiber.;SOLUTION: This method is a method for carrying out quickly and easily an accurate measuring method for the endrogenous ultra-low PMD optical fiber under a low mode coupling condition. The method includes introduction of a plurality of local external perturbations in the optical fiber, and a group delay time difference is used as standard measuring technique after the optical fiber is allowed to reach to a stationary condition. The plurality of local external perturbations is changed based on other measured value of the group delay time difference. The polarization mode dispersion is calculated as an average value of a Maxwell distribution after a sufficient number of measured values are obtained and after the Maxwell distribution is provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
