PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern teaching system that can optimize a neural network while reducing the number of nodes between a middle layer and an output layer, and can thus provide high-precision pattern teaching even with reduced computational complexity. PSOLUTION: The pattern teaching system 1 has the middle layer 40 having a plurality of first-class units 10 adapted to vary their own signal outputs in dependence of results of comparison between sums of signal inputs and a first threshold, and the output layer 50 having a plurality of second-class units 11 adapted to vary output signals Oi. Learning processing is as follows. Two or more types of patterns to be identified are input in repeated sequence into an input layer 30, and upon every input of each pattern to be identified, output side connection adjusting means 21 recombine nodes between the second-class units 11 and the first-class units 10 for outputting the middle signals mi and adjust weights of connection between the input layer 30 and the first-class units 10, to thus improve matching states of the output signals Oi from the second-class units 11 forming the output layer 50 and teaching signals Ti.
