PURPOSE: To efficiently treat water containing ammoniacal nitrogen and a larger quantity of nitrate nitrogen than the ammoniacal nitrogen. ;CONSTITUTION: The ammoniacal nitrogen and the nitrate nitrogen are decomposed by adding a reducing agent after adding ammonia or an ammonium salt so that the content of the ammoniacal nitrogen is the same as that of the nitrate nitrogen by measuring the ammoniacal nitrogen and the nitrate nitrogen in a raw water, and next, allowing to contact with a catalyst under a heated condition. As a result, since the same content of the ammoniacal nitrogen as that of the nitrate nitrogen is present, the ammoniacal nitrogen and the nitrate nitrogen are efficiently decomposed with the reaction of NH₄⁺+ NO₃^-+H₂=N₂+3H₂O.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
