PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) by which a carbonized product or a graphitized product of the MCMB without covering peripheries of the resultant MCMB spheres with a pitch component improves an ability to occlude lithium ions as effects of the peripheries uncovered with the pitch component and the charge-discharge efficiency is a higher value than a discharge capacity. PSOLUTION: This method for producing the MCMB without covering the peripheries of the resultant MCMB spheres with the pitch component is carried out as follows. A coal heavy oil is heat-treated and a tar middle oil having 100-500C boiling range in an amount of 0.1-20 times the weight of crude MCMB is added to the produced crude MCMB.
