PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection type display device having a high output, high efficiency, high quality of display and little noise. SOLUTION: The device consists of a matrix substrate having switching transistors 40, pixel electrodes 41 or the like on a glass plate 20, a transparent glass substrate 24 having a transparent electrode 25, and an optical modulation layer 23 held between the substrates. A dielectric film 42 having a flattened surface and a dielectric multilayered film mirror 43 are formed on the pixel electrodes 41.
