PURPOSE:To obtain a new 2,2-disubstituted-1,3-cyclohexanedione derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for a steroid. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) lower alkyl] such as 2-(3'-butenyl)-2-methyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione. The compound of formula I is obtained by alkylating 2-(3'-butenyl)1,3-cyclohexanedione of formula II with an alkylating agent such as methyl iodide.
