PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatize an operation for severing roots and leaves of bean sprouts.;SOLUTION: The bean sprouts transported from a bean sprout supply conveyor 21 are dropped in a cylindrical casing 15 moving on an upper severing table 11 and stored in a standing state in the cylindrical case 15. A first severing operation in which the roots or the leaves of the bean sprouts laid downward in the cylindrical casing 15 are dropped in a severing slit 14 of the upper severing table 11 and the roots or the leaves are nipped between an edge at the lower side of the cylindrical case 15 and the edge of the severing slit 14 and severing is carried out by sending air into the cylindrical casing 15 from its top by a blower casing 19. Then, a second severing operation is performed in which the cylindrical casing 15 is vertically inverted, the bean sprouts in the cylindrical casing 15 are reversed, the roots or the leaves of the bean sprouts laid downward by the inversion are severed by a lower severing table 12 in the same manner as that of the first severing operation.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
