The present invention relates to the use of phase equilibria as shown in the phase diagram of Cu—In—Se for the preparation of solid compositions. Further, a new method for directly obtaining &agr; CulnSe2 from a liquid phase, preferably as a single phase composition and novel single phase &agr; CulnSe2 compositions are provided.
