The invention provides a method for determining the colorectal cancer susceptibility of a patient comprising determining a patients genotype at the manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene locus, wherein a patient with one or two alleles encoding alanine at position 9 of the signal peptide has an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Also provided are nucleic acid probes and kits for determining a patients colorectal cancer risk.
