In accordance with the method of the present invention, a theoretical cell voltage is first calculated, which is compared to the measured cell voltage. The cumulative difference between the theoretical cell voltage and the measured cell voltage is constantly monitored and when this difference is provided for the current efficiency, process status information can be obtained continuously. A decrease in current efficiency is an obvious indicator of short circuits between the electrodes, and by the method in accordance with the present invention, it is possible to concentrate the short circuit removal work on the correct cell groups from the point of view of the current efficiency of electrolysis.
