The present invention relates to liposomal pharmaceutical compositions containing mitoxantrone, to processes for their preparation and to their use. The pharmaceutical compositions of the present invention comprise liposomal compositions of amitoxantrone in which the aliposome, together with various neutral or charged liposome-forming compounds, contains a substance known to bind mitoxantrone. An example of such a substance is acardiolipin. Liposomal formulations may be advantageously used in combination with secondary therapeutic agents other than amitoxantrone, such as antineoplasmic, antifungal agents, antibiotics, and the like.
