The casing (2) has a means (3) for coupling the device (1) to the object being located. At least one float chamber (5) which is sealed tight can be connected under tension to the casing and is connected to the latter via at least one wire. At least one liquid absorbent part is designed to be positioned between a part of the casing and a part of the chamber when the latter is connected to the casing under tension. At least one inlet (8) is provided for supplying liquid to the absorbent part, so that the latter expands and disconnects the casing from the chamber. An Independent claim is also included for a method for locating an underwater object using this device, by letting the object and the device attached to it sink, allowing water to be sucked into the casing to come into contact with the absorbent part so that it expands and disconnects the casing from the float and allowing the float to rise to the surface in order to indicate the position of the lost object.
