A method for testing the packing of a particulate material (14) inside a reactor pipe (12), especially for testing the packing density, involves supplying a flow of air to an inlet side of the pipe and measuring the pressure on this side of the pipe. The flow of air is supplied at a constant mass flow rate. An Independent claim is also included for a testing device used to carry out the above method, comprising a measurement probe which can be connected to the reactor pipe and to an air source and which includes a pressure gauge and a control device comprising a mass flow meter for altering the amount of air supplied.
