The system comprises an integral or auxiliary Brayton cycle with at least one rotary compressor (4) into which a hot nebulised evaporating medium (e.g. water) is injected via one or more explosive nebuliser units (5a, 5b), e.g. a Swirlflash device. Temperature before, during and after compression is reduced so that a significant amount of heat can be recovered from the exhaust gases generated by the engine (2). The compressed recovered air is supplied to at least one expander (3) and used to drive the compressor and generate extra power in a separate generator (8).
