The metal surface is cleaned and etched using an organic solvent or peroxide solution and ammonium ions, pre-treated with a template or seed- forming solution and contacted with a zeolite synthesis solution. A method for forming a zeolite on a metal surface of an object (1) involves: (a) cleaning and etching the metal surface by treatment with an organic solvent or peroxide solution, followed by treatment with a solution or liquid comprising or forming ammonium ions; (b) pre-treatment of the cleaned and etched surface using a template or seed- forming solution; and (c) contacting the pre-treated surface with a zeolite synthesis solution. An independent claim is also included for an autoclave device (4) comprising a number of objects, each of which has two or more surfaces upon which a zeolite can be formed.
