In a development phase, infra-red light reflected by samples of material are measured in order to determine the infra-red light reflection coefficient and quality parameters of the sample are measured so that a statistical calibration model is created for statistical analysis of the measured reflectance coefficient in relation to the measured quality parameters. During a measuring phase, infra-light (5, 5A) reflected by the object (4) being analyzed is used to determine the infra-red light reflection coefficient of the object and this coefficient and the statistical calibration model are used to determine quality parameters for the object. A qualitative analysis method for a fibrous material comprises a development phase and a measuring phase. The development phase comprises the following steps: (a) preparing samples of the material; (b) shining infra-red light onto a sample; (c) detecting light reflected by the sample; (d) determining the infra-red light reflection coefficient of the sample; (e) measuring quality parameters of the sample; and (f) developing a statistical calibration model for statistical analysis of the measured reflectance coefficient in relation to the measured quality parameters. The measuring phase comprises the following steps: (a) shining infra-red light (3) onto the object to be analyzed; (b) detecting light reflected by the object; (c) determining the infra-red light reflection coefficient of the object; and (d) using the statistical calibration model and infra-red light reflection coefficient of the object to determine quality parameters for the object. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) Method for determining the quality of fibrous materials comprising the above measuring phase; and (b) System for carrying out either of these methods.
