The fabrication of metal parts varying in chemical composition along their length comprises incremental solidification of melt to give a functional gradient of properties. Also claimed is apparatus implementing the process. The apparatus adds continuously granules, filaments and alloy melts to the induction-heated mould, with variation in the position of the heater relative to the mould. The products can also be based on a metal matrix.
