The strap tensioner includes a pressure arm with two side plates (31) and a hand grip (32). Each side plate has one end rotatable around the shaft (11) of a ratchet device (10), and the handle is connected between the two other ends of the side plates for the gripping of the tensioner and tensioning of the strap. A luminous coating (50) is provided around the handle and this may be a plastic sleeve containing luminous powder, or may be a luminescent paper bonded to the handle and with a transparent plastic sleeve around it.
