Method for producing an electrochromic device and solid state devices and corresponding applications. The electrochromic device comprises at least a substrate and a layer structure wherein the layer structure comprises at least one layer of electrochromic material and a layer of electrolyte material and transparent solid inorganic ionic conductor electronic insulator. The process comprises at least one step of depositing atoms of at least one metal of low atomic weight, from the vapor phase of atoms, and a step of introducing hydrogen into at least one of said layers. The electrochromic device is preferably applicable to the manufacture of mirrors and panes of motor vehicles.
