Hydrogenation catalysts comprising palladium METAL SUPPORTED ON ACTIVATED CARBON, BEING LESS THAN 50% BY WEIGHT OF PALLADIUM comprised within a surface layer of a thickness of 50 microns, with the remainder comprised in a layer of thickness between 50 and 400 MICRON. The catalysts can be used in particular for purifying terephthalic acid obtained by oxidation of p - xylene. They are prepared by dry impregnation of the support.
