The present invention provides a vaccine whichprotects pigs from a virus and/or an infectious agentcausing a porcine respiratory and reproductive disease, amethod of protecting a pig from a disease caused by a virusand/or an infectious agent which causes a respiratory andreproductive disease, a method of producing a vaccineagainst a virus and/or an infectious agent causing aporcine reproductive and respiratory disease, and abiologically pure sample of a virus and/or infectious agentassociated with a porcine respiratory and reproductivedisease, particularly the Iowa strain of porcinereproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), and anisolated polynucleotide which is at least 90% homologouswith a polynucleotide obtained from the genome of a virusand/or infectious agent which causes a porcine respiratoryand reproductive disease.
