OXYGEN SCAVENGING STRUCTURES HAVING ORGANIC OXYGEN SCAVENGING MATERIAL AND HAVING A POLYMERIC SELECTIVE BARRIER

Disclosed is a composition comprising a layer carrying an organic oxygenscavenging material and a polymeric selective barrier layer. The polymericselective barrier layer permits oxygen to migrate from the packaged volume tothe organic oxygen scavenging material, and the polymeric selective barrierlayer blocks migration of compounds created during oxidation of the organicoxygen scavenging material from the layer carrying the organic oxygenscavenging material to the interior of the package in which the composition ofthis invention is incorporated. In one embodiment, the polymeric selectivebarrier layer has a glass transition temperature greater than about 5 ~C abovethe use temperature of the package in which the composition of this inventionis incorporated. In another embodiment, the polymeric selective barrier layerhas a glass transition temperature greater than about 40 ~C. In yet anotherembodiment, the polymeric selective barrier layer is an oriented polymer. In afurther embodiment, the layer carrying the organic oxygen scavenging materialis a polymer having oxidizable sites in the polymer and containing atransition metal salt catalyst.
