The invention relates to a method for determining the precipitation rate by double polarization radar and a meteorological radar using it. The method consists, from the signals received on the two polarization channels H and V of the radar, to first determine on a single polarization an estimate of the precipitation rates R a (19, 30 to 32) along the radar beam , in each gate in distance i, then a first estimated value (h) of the integral of the precipitation rates, finally, from the attenuated reflectivity coefficient (ZH a (r)) an estimate (35 to 38, 47, 48) of the coefficient of non-attenuated differential reflectivity (Z DR ~ (r)). Furthermore, we determine (30, 40 to 42) the measured value of the attenuated differential reflectivity coefficient (Z DR s (r)) and we deduce (43, 44) the integral (I2) of the precipitation rates which is compared (45, 46) with the first estimated value (I1) so as to iteratively adjust a parameter (a) of the method applied to the H polarization alone. When a is adjusted, we have (38, 47) corrected values of the non-attenuated reflectivity coefficient and the precipitation rate. The invention applies to weather radars.
