OXYGEN-FUEL BOOST REFORMER PROCESS AND APPARATUS

A process and apparatus for the production of reformed gases. Natural gas andoxygen are combusted in a fast stage (196) to producecarbon dioxide and water. The products of combustion are conveyed to a secondstage (202). Reforming gas and oxygen are injected intothe second stage (202) and mixed with the products of combustion to react withthe carbon dioxide and water to produce carbon monoxideand hydrogen. The process and apparatus are particularly adapted for use insupplementing the reform gases produced in a Direct ReducedIron plant wherein iron ore is reduced to iron inside a shaft furnace. Theprocess and apparatus may also be used to provide heatedenrichment natural gas for use as a source of carbon in the shaft furnace toprovide for carburization of the iron. Additonally, the processand apparatus may be used as a process control device for controlling thetemperature of the reformed gases flowing to the shaft furnace.
