A method for determining the azimuthal direction of a maximum in a series ofgamma ray count measurements that are each assignedto an azimuthal sector, comprising: determining the x- and y- components ofthe gamma ray counts for each sector, averaging the componentvalues to obtain averaged x- and y-components, and calculating thecorresponding aximuthal angle for the maximum by computing thearctangent of the ratio of the averaged y- and x-components.
