A fluorescent entity (U) comprises: a fluorophore (except a rare earth metal cryptate); and at least one functional group, introduced or generated on the fluorophore or one of oligonucleotides or oligonucleotide analogs. The fluorophore is covalently attached to at least one oligonucleotide(s) or oligonucleotide analog(s). Independent claims are also included for: (1) A fluorescent conjugate consisting of the entity covalently attached to a carrier molecule; and (2) A method for increasing the fluorescence intensity of a fluorophore, for decreasing the aggregation at the surface or for increasing quantum yield of a fluorophore attached to a carrier molecule, in which a fluorescent entity is used as a fluorophore.
