In order to increase the frequency range guided in the core of a photonic crystal fibre, the photonic crystal cladding structure is optimised with respect to an increased overlap of the band gaps (120, 110, 130) with the light line (100) of the fibre core. For a fibre with a hollow core and a cladding consisting of cylindrical air rods in a silica matrix arranged in a triangular lattice, this overlap can be optimised by increasing the air filling factor which 'tilts' the band gaps towards the core light line.
