The invention provides for a method for establishing the approximate time of death of a dead organism. The method involves taking at least one sample of micro flora associated with the dead organism, extracting a sample of DNA from the micro flora, amplifying and conducting analysis of the amplified DNA, and comparing the analysis of the amplified DNA to an established standard profile of changes that occur following death.
