Process for preparing sterically stabilized, aqueous polymer dispersions, emulgator free aqueous polymer dispersions, and powder for use in building materials prepared therefrom

The process is for production of sterically stabilised aqueous polymer dispersions based on styrene and 1-8 carbon alkyl (meth)acrylate(s), which are free from emulsifier and have increased mortar stability. The process comprises adding 1-20 wt.% 1-8 C hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate(s) with respect to total monomers in the presence of a water-soluble protective colloid and a free radical initiator or an initiator system consisting of a free radical initiator and a water-soluble reducing agent. Also claimed are (a) powder that is redispersible in water, prepared from these dispersions, and (b) a method of producing the powder.
