A wireless device (210) and a receiving computing system (230) communicate over a carrier network (220). The wireless device (210) submits a request for service (240) to the receiving computing system (230), which then returns (250) an authentication key (251). The authentication key (251) is routed using the telephone number (241) stated in the request for service (240) as being associated with the wireless device (210). However, the authentication key (251) is dispatched over a different data transport mechanism (222). For example, the request (240) may be submitted using an IP data transport mechanism, while the authentication key (251) is returned using an SMS data transport mechanism. The wireless device (210) then evidences, through appropriate communication (260), that the wireless device (210) both submitted the request (240) and received the response (250). Accordingly, the telephone number (241) is verified as being associated with the telephone number.
