PURPOSE: An electronic nose system and a method is provided to effectively detect harmful gas and impurities contained in volatile oil of a vehicle by applying an artificial neural network to the electronic nose system. CONSTITUTION: When gas is injected through an air pump(1) and a light source(2), an interference filter(3) selectively filters gas introduced. Filtered gas is detected by a sensor so as to transfer gas into a central processing unit(7). At this time, noise contained in gas is removed. The central processing unit(7) stores information about gas in an EEPROM(8) and displays a state of gas in a density display(10). A power section(9) supplies power to a signal processor(6) and the central processing unit(7). A catalyst filter layer is formed so as to improve sensitivity with respect to hydrocarbon gas and to achieve a selectivity with respect to reducing gas.
