The present invention provides dimethyl cyclohexanedica in the presence of a supported catalyst group having a unique combination of properties, including palladium and a Group VIII second metal selected from nickel, platinum, ruthenium or mixtures thereof, affixed on an alumina support. Disclosed is a process for preparing a carboxylate by hydrogenation of the corresponding dimethyl benzenedicarboxylate ester. The use of the catalyst allows the process to be carried out at significantly lower process pressures.
