PURPOSE: A method for preparing an oxidized starch is provided, to oxidize the primary alcohol selectively into the carboxy group and to improve the production yield, the purity and the reaction velocity. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of reacting starch with 1 equivalent of sodium hypochlorite and 1.0 N NaOH, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine oxoammonium(TEMPO) and sodium bromide at a room temperature and under an atmospheric pressure, thereby oxidizing the primary alcohol selectively into the carboxy group. Also the method comprises the step of reacting starch with 2 equivalent of sodium hypochlorite and 0.5 N NaOH, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine oxoammonium(TEMPO) and sodium bromide at a room temperature and an atmospheric pressure, thereby oxidizing the primary alcohol selectively into the carboxy group. Preferably the pH is 9-12.
