PURPOSE: A method for controlling frame relay data traffic of an ATM system is provided to reduce the number of frame relay data traffic control timers, thereby improving performance and resources of frame relay traffic management. CONSTITUTION: An ATM system initializes a 'Tcq' list(S21), and drives a timer corresponding to a 'Tcq' value(S22). The ATM system sets 'Tcq' token refill flags for all virtual channels(S23). The ATM system decides whether a frame relay virtual channel registration request message is received(S24). If so, the ATM system receives the request message, inputs CIR(Committed Information Rate), Bc(Committed Burst size), and Be(Excess Burst size) values(S25), and calculates a mathematical formula(S28). The ATM system makes up a fixed number of a calculated 'Tcq' value(S27), and calculates new Bc and Be values(S28). The ATM system registers virtual channel information in the 'Tcq' list(S29), and generates a timer(S30). The ATM system clears the token refill flags(S31). The ATM system initializes Bc_Token and Be_Token values(S32).
