High-speed network services will be phased into our daily lifengradually in the coming years. With fiber optic data rates over gigabitsnper second to a persons home, the distinction among the LANs, MANs andnWANs will eventually disappear. The reason is not because of anparticular protocol but rather the ultrahigh raw speed provided by thenfiber technologies. This paper will address the design of frame relaynand ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and will suggest enhancements tonmake the ATM protocol suitable for all digital communications
