PURPOSE: A method for detecting a bar code image effectively using a mathematical algorithm is provided to extract an image of a bar code effectively by obtaining a geometrical characteristic of a bar code using a mathematical algorithm and executing a labeling. CONSTITUTION: Directions of an image pixel of a bar code are calculated using a line operator. An accumulated histogram of the pixel as to each direction is calculated. A block having the largest difference between the maximum value and the minimum value in the accumulated histogram is decided as a block of a bar code area. A threshold value is calculated using the maximum value and the minimum value in the accumulated histogram. A block having a larger difference between the maximum value and the minimum value in the histogram than the threshold value according to blocks is classified as a block having a geometrical characteristic of a bar code. An image of the bar code decided based on the block having a geometrical characteristic is binarized. The binarized bar code image is labeled, and candidate blocks of the bar code are decided. A gradient and a central point of the bar code are obtained using pixels of the candidate blocks, and a straight line which is vertical to the bar code and passes the central point is drawn, and the bar code is detected.
