PURPOSE: A bus information system and a method for operating bus information using the same are provided to reduce an installation cost by using an existing service network. CONSTITUTION: A bus information system includes a position locator(50), a wireless station(20), a bus(30a-30c), a guide unit(40a,40b), and a bus information system center(10). The position locator(50) is installed at a bus station to output the position data. The wireless station(20) is connected to the bus information system center to provide the traveling information and the position information. The bus(30a-30c) includes a terminal for transmitting wireless data to the wireless station and the guide unit for the data to the bus information system center. The guide unit(40a,40b) provides the bus arrival information. The bus information system center(10) manages the traveling state of the bus, transmits messages to the guide unit, collects the data of the wireless station, and sends the collected data to the terminal.
