SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TRANSMITTING INCOMING CALLS TO MOBILE UNITS IN BORDER CELLS USING PACKET-BASED LINKS

PURPOSE: A system and a method for transmitting incoming calls to mobile units in border cells using packet-based links are provided to remove the need for service providers to purchase and maintain dedicated voice circuits connecting border cells by delivering the incoming calls to the mobile units in the border cells by using the packet-based links. CONSTITUTION: An incoming call is received at an SMSC(Serving Mobile Switching Center) for a mobile unit in a border cell served by a BMSC(Border Mobile Switching Center). The SMSC allocates processing resources for the incoming call using a voice coder/frame selector and designates a DLCI(Data Link Connection Identifier) identifying the voice coder resources to be used for the call(420). The SMSC sends the DLCI to the BMSC and the BMSC assigns traffic channel resources for the call via an attached base station(422). The BMSC provides the DLCI to a base station to establish a packet link between the voice coder and the traffic channel resources(424). Thereafter, the BMSC rings the mobile unit(426). When the mobile unit answers(430) and the BMSC informs the answer to the SMSC(432), the SMSC connects the incoming call to the packet link, thereby completing the call path to the mobile unit.
