PURPOSE: A data input circuit and a data input method are provided to control a setup time and a hold time of data according to a frequency of an external clock. CONSTITUTION: According to the data input circuit(1000) of a synchronous semiconductor memory device outputting data by being synchronized to an external clock, a data input buffer receives data and buffers it and then outputs it. A frequency detection circuit(120) receives the external clock, and detects clock frequency information of the external clock and then outputs the clock frequency information. A delay circuit(130) delays the external clock in response to the clock frequency information. And an output circuit outputs output data of the data input buffer by being synchronized to an output signal of the delay control circuit.
