PURPOSE: Provided is an improved friction material with reliable and improved properties compared to those of the prior art. CONSTITUTION: The friction material comprises: a first layer(12) comprising a base material and a type of resin material, and a second layer(14) comprising a type of friction modifying particle on a top surface of the base material. The friction modifying particles have a type of substantially symmetrical geometric shape, the second layer have an average thickness of about 30 to about 200 microns, wherein the top layer has a fluid permeability lower than the first layer. The layer of the friction modifying particles has a thickness of about 60 to about 100 microns. The top layer has a lower permeability in the radial direction and a lower permeability in the normal direction that the first layer.
