PURPOSE: A variable optical attenuator using a directional coupler type optical waveguide and a fabricating method thereof are provided to control accurately a characteristic of optical attenuation by using a principle of a bidirectional coupler. CONSTITUTION: A variable optical attenuator using a directional coupler type optical waveguide includes a main optical waveguide(107), a variable optical waveguide(107'), and a comb actuator(114). The main optical waveguide(107) and the variable optical waveguide(107') are installed in a constant interval. The interval between the main optical waveguide(107) and the variable optical waveguide(107') is controlled by using the comb actuator(114) to attenuate the light through the main optical waveguide(107).
