PURPOSE: Provided is an optical material, particularly a film, based on a transparent heat resistant resin, which has negative double refraction characteristics and excellent heat resistance and dynamic properties, and shows high refractive index and high Abbe index. CONSTITUTION: The optical material based on a transparent heat resistant resin comprises a copolymer including olefin units represented by the following formula 1 and N-phenyl substituted maleimide units represented by the following formula 2, wherein the copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of 5X10¬3-5X10¬6 as calculated in terms of standard polystyrene. In formula 1, each of R1, R2 and R3 is a C1-C6 alkyl group. In formula 2, each of R4 and R5 is a C1-C8 linear or branched alkyl group; each of R7, R8 and R9 is H, a halogen, carboxylic acid, carboxylate ester, OH, CN, NO or a C1-C8 linear or branched alkyl group; and each of R6 and R10 is H, a halogen, carboxylic acid, carboxylate ester, OH, CN, NO or a C1-C8 linear or branched alkyl group, with the proviso that when any one of R6 and R10 is H, the other should represent a halogen, carboxylic acid, carboxylate, OH, CN, NO or a C1-C8 linear or branched alkyl group, other than H.
