PURPOSE: A variable turbocharger control method of a diesel engine is provided to improve the starting performance by adding control logic for controlling a sliding nozzle ring gap of a turbocharger, in starting a diesel engine vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A variable turbocharger control method of a diesel engine comprises steps of detecting a vehicle action state change(S100); receiving a speed range, an accelerator pedal opening degree, and engine rpm(revolutions per minute) and deciding whether the engine is in an idle state(S110); setting up 1 as a first set variable and deciding whether the speed range of a manual transmission is situated at a position of a first stage or a second stage(S120,S130); setting up 1 as a second set variable and deciding a driver's accelerator pedal operation state(S140,S150); if the accelerator pedal opening degree value is under a first set reference value, setting up 1 as a third set variable(S160); comparing the variables corresponding to the engine idle sate, the speed range, and the accelerator opening degree with variable turbocharger reduction conditions in starting a vehicle(S170); outputting a control signal for moving a sliding nozzle ring(S180); deciding the satisfying state of a variable turbocharger sliding nozzle ring reduction release condition by the engine idle state, the speed range, and the accelerator pedal opening degree(S190); and outputting a control signal for controlling the variable turbocharger sliding nozzle ring varying according to the engine idle state, the speed range, and the accelerator pedal opening degree(S195).
