PURPOSE: A high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp lighting apparatus and a headlight device for a motor vehicle are provided to allow for a smooth and quick rise of quantity of light by varying the reduction ratio of the lamp power in accordance with the variation of the rising characteristics of the quantity of light of the lamp. CONSTITUTION: A high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp lighting apparatus comprises a high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp(HPL); a lighting circuit unit(OC) for energizing the high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp; and a controller(CC) for lighting the high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp by supplying lamp power larger than a rated lamp power from the lighting circuit unit, controlling the lighting circuit unit such that the lamp power is sequentially reduced in accordance with predetermined reduction ratio characteristics and stabilized to the rated lamp power, and varying the reduction ratio characteristics in accordance with the variation of rising characteristics of the quantity of light of the lamp.
