PURPOSE: A method for isolating a compound for treating diabetic nephropathy from phytolacca americana and a pharmaceutical composition containing the compound are provided which controls a proliferation and a hypertrophy of a glomerular mesangial cell. CONSTITUTION: The method for isolating the compound for treating the diabetic nephropathy from the phytolacca americana comprises the steps of: extracting a root of the phytolacca americana with an alcohol and isolating an organic solvent layer; applying the layer to the column chromatography(silica) and controlling a polarity of a solvent to isolate an active fraction; and recrystallizing the isolated active fraction to obtain a recrystallized active material. The compound is alpha-spinasterol represented by a formula 1.
