PURPOSE: A recording device, a file management method, a program of the file management method, and a recording medium for recording the program of the file management method are provided to set valid/null flags in a slot of a property, and to set a final valid slot number showing a final slot of a slot which is set to be valid by valid/null information in a header of the property, thereby reducing a waste caused by an empty slot. CONSTITUTION: A system control micro computer obtains management information by a file management system of an optical disk, and obtains an address of an index file from the management information(SP1,SP2). The micro computer starts reproducing the index file according to the obtained address, and records data of a property entry header of the index file in an embedded memory. The micro computer detects a final valid slot number from the data of the property entry header recorded in the memory(SP3). The micro computer sets a detected data length as a parameter, and outputs a reproduction command of the index file.
